Skwxwú7mesh – Squamish
Overview
Squamish Nation is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish peoples who lived in the Vancouver area, Gibsons, and the Squamish River watershed. Squamish Nation’s oral histories state they have existed within their traditional territory since time immemorial. Squamish territory includes nine communities stretching from North Vancouver to the northern area of Howe Sound. Their language is Skwxwú7mesh snichim (Squamish language).
After contact with European settlers, 16 Squamish-speaking tribes united to form Squamish Nation. The founding document states, “Squamish Nation of Indians on July 23, 1923 unanimously agreed the only solution for good government was to consolidate the nation revenues, reserves equally for the people and to have a council comprised of the 16 Chiefs.” The Nation continues to be governed by a combination of elected officials and hereditary chiefs. Squamish society is, and always has been, governed by complex laws and rules based on family, status, and spiritual rights.
