This section offers a brief overview of the three cultural groups represented on this website.

Fiji

The Republic of the Fiji Islands is made of approximately 330 tiny islands, of which around 100 are inhabited. Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, Fiji is sited to the north of New Zealand and northwest of Australia. Fiji was first settled about three-and-a-half-thousand years ago. The original inhabitants are now called “Lapita people” after a distinctive type of fine pottery they produced.

Xaaydaa – Haida

Haida people have occupied Haida Gwaii since time immemorial. Their traditional territory encompasses parts of southern Alaska, the archipelago of Haida Gwaii, and its surrounding waters.

Skwxwú7mesh – Squamish

The Squamish Nation is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal peoples who lived in the present day Greater Vancouver area, Gibsons, and the Squamish River watershed. The Squamish Nation has occupied and governed its territory since beyond recorded history.
