Dr. George Raley collected this dugout canoe while he was a missionary and teacher at Coqualeetza Residential School in Sardis. B.C. The model river canoe is carved and unpainted. The underside of the canoe slopes to a gentle point, and the bow and stern are identical. Just like the other model canoes, this one was also used as a teaching tool for children. Why do you think the carver took the time to make the bow and stern identical for a children’s toy?
