This carrying basket was made by Mary Jacob in Pemberton, Mount Currie, B.C. It was gifted to Charles Borden, a museum archaeologist, by Christina Charles, a Squamish woman living at Musqueam between 1940 and 1978. Such baskets were made by women and young girls, who used them to carry items like water, stones, firewood, roots, fruits, seeds, weaving materials, fish and game. Note the wide woven strap. We can learn how the baskets were traded by connecting the fact that it was made by a woman from Pemberton, B.C. and gifted to a museum archaeologist by a Squamish woman.  Baskets were and continue to be highly valued trade items.
